Materials and Equipment Acceptance (MEA)

Photo of BridgeAs required by Section 27-131 of the New York City Building Code certain materials and appliances require a Materials Equipment Acceptance (MEA) approval. These manufactured items affect public safety (which includes structural stability) or fire safety and are usually a permanent part of a building. They range from boilers, air-conditioning equipment, commercial cooking equipment, fire-rated assemblies, fire alarm equipment, fire suppression equipment, wheelchair lifts, etc. The actual list of what requires approval is known as the MEA Index, which is available at the New York CITYSTORE .

All manufacturers that receive an approval from MEA have a copy of the resolution which states what particular model numbers have met the minimum performance standards of the New York City Building Code (for the most part these standards are National Performance Standards, some of which are modified for additional safety).

  • Any manufacturer seeking MEA approval may obtain application forms by calling (212) 566-3282.

Products that are required to pass MEA standards are listed in the “Department of Buildings, City of NY, Index of Accepted Materials and Equipment”. This index can be purchased the: The NY City Store 212-669-8246
